Chapters and Verses of the Holy Quran

Number of the Chapters

Scholars unanimously believe that the number of Chapters of the Holy Quran is 114, which starts with the Al-Fatiha and ends with Al-Nas.

Division of the Chapters of the Holy Quran

Scholars have divided the chapters of the Holy Quran as comes below:

Seven Long Chapters: This consists of: AL-BAQARAH, AL-E-IMRAAN, AN-NESA, AL-MAEDA, AL-ANAAM, AL-AARAF, AL-TAWBA. Some Scholars think for having no BISMILLAH between the chapters of AL-ANFAAL and AL-TAWBA, then the chapter of AL-ANFAAL must be the seventh one.

Hundred Ones: These are chapters with a bit more or less than one hundred verses. It seems that chapters between YUNUS and AL-SHUARA belong to this group.

Praiseful ones: Chapters which come after The Hundred ones are of this group. They are called Praiseful ones because we Praise our Lord in these chapters more than in the Hundred and the Long Chapters.

Separated ones: Separation happens more frequently between these chapters with the BISMILLAH phrase. Scholars have different views in appointing a chapter as the first one in this group. Some say the AL-HUJURAAT and others think QAAF is the beginning of this group. Anyway, these chapters are divided into the following sub-groups as well:

-        Long Separated ones: Up to AL-MURSALAAT.

-        Intermediate Separated ones: from AN-NABA up to AL-LAIL

-        Short Separated ones: from AD-DHUHA up to AN-NAS.
